i haven't gotten to comics in a bit, but i wanted to drop rare flavours on here. this is a beautiful comic and saying anything would be too much of a spoiler. its about human nature, food, journeys, generations, and more. my academic twitter uses a line as the backdrop from here!
I love comics; since high school, I have been into comics around X-Men and Batman as popular properties, but also psych thrillers, philosophy-related, and other kinds of indie stories. I closely follow critiques, lettering stylistics, panel layouts, colouring, design choices, story collaborations, etc. I also get super inspired by the amazing journeys of authors like Ram V or Vita Ayala, very self-made people who found their popular character niches as well. I highlight one of the most memorable and highly rated of my all-time reads with a Muller-designed cover. This comic has a very fun premise from the drop and turns out in a wildly paced, deep exploration of characters. If you end up reading, Dio(nysus) is the one I vibe with the most!
there are so many things i want to put in here, but there are two who come to my mind right away. they are wild, they are organic, they are creative, and grounded. I am putting up these samples because I love doja and beads, but you are welcome to explore all they have to offer
I follow design and fashion choices/patterns/intricacies in architecture, clothes, and more. I appreciate creators in the field pointing out these details for the people outside the field, which makes it more accessible for everyone and social media a better place for me! This channel on Instagram is a new find that explores some very well-thought-out but rarely talked-about architectural feats in India, the image is an example of such a Burtalist architecture following library and archive.
since i already dropped Chucky and horror, this is the time for some hard hitting, well made, evergreen animated series, that is close to my heart. korra et al. (and aang) are a handful of growing up teen tropes that turn into a very nuanced portrayal of trauma, geopolitics, friendships, history, being a whole self, and bonds that are closer. some flashbacks fall through as my phd brings out the worst of me.
Non-supernatural horror has been my favourite genre. I love movies that make me think; they are relaxing. The Substance turned out to be the best for that this year. I paired that with It's What's Inside and a Chucky (movies and series) binge. A big sci-fi thriller series recommendation, which is super well made in the same vein, is Russian Doll.
while i would love to drop another puzzle, i have been more into language change as it happens this year, and people who have been putting that puzzle together neatly. how 67 got a new meaning and what that implies in the larger context of language, society, art, culture, and power is analysed very well by aidan here (who has also penned literature titled: "on skibidi").
I am a fan of linguistic puzzles, both creating and solving them. This space is for highlighting an interesting puzzle that you can try and understand the vibe of, have fun!
since i namedropped doja last year and since all her discography inspires me, here's her. i love the art that she puts out, in the form of performances (ref: snl aahhh men!!! and gorgeous, and mtv), stage presence (ref: vie tour, scarlet tour, and more), fashion, and of course albums + collabs. she combines my favorite genres and experiments a lot, not all of them work for the people, but she is confident in herself and keeps learning!
I am currently into R&B, hyperpop, indie pop, hip-hop, etc. This album has taken over almost the entirety of 2024 for me! It has been a fascinating rollout in terms of creativity, both in collaborations and in design decisions. The idea of a follow-up album to the hit, which finds a reimagination of all the songs, was also brilliant to me! My headphones have either streamed Charli or Doja most of the year. By the way, I love Bharg, Ella Mai, and Shygirl's rise and hope for bigger!
twitter has been bleak this year, or i have been away, or both. i am dropping something which i did love recently and i think there are certain demographics of internet people that really accelerate language change online and tend to use it to the point that it does stick around.
I am a very Twitter (not X) person. A good summary of my RTs would be witty, pretty, and niche. This bird is very slay in a very accurately pointed-out Armani Prive couture feathering.
outside of academic news, there's more academic-adjacent news this year. across ai4gs, indoml, aacl-ijcnlp, and mbzuai symposium (i hope), i ended up meeting reallly cool people. a special mention to the long chats with Profs. Mrinmaya, Aditya (Joshi), Saif (from NRC), and the catch up chats with Profs. Dipti & Manish (IIIT), all of which again got me thinking, reminiscing, and looking forward to a lot. here's me being shot while i was trying to keep myself and Saumitra awake 😅
Outside of academic news, I recently did a little trip with my sister and friends around Abu Dhabi and Dubai. We enjoyed strolling at the Louvre, cleansing auras at Aya, and Spinning the Cheese with Tom and Jerry at the Warner Bros.!
